The Khaite woman was never really that tough a woman. She was powerful, yes, and also confident, sexy, refined, and so on. But she was never that intimidating figure that one would never approach willy nilly. However, this all changed when Catherine Holstein presented her brand’s Pre-Fall 2019 Collection. Her designer label is just two years old, and while she has laid out a specific aesthetic that countless women have gravitated toward, it’s risky and astonishing that she decided to drastically change her look up a bit. This season, her woman is as tough as nails, sporting wide shoulders, ripped jeans, and her all-too-powerful streamlined silhouette. The cropped leather biker jacket was especially noteworthy as it perfectly summarized what Holstein wants to give her customers this season—desirable basics with their own unique edge. Here, the shoulders were more defined (exaggerated even) and the pants were longer and wider. A black cotton bustier dress seemed to suggest that this new woman isn’t afraid to be fetishistic at times. But for those who still want to look feminine with Khaite clothes, there are a few numbers that harken back to the label’s signature styles, particularly an almost off-the-shoulder mid-length little black dress with puff cap sleeves. But even this dainty frock had a tough edge to it as well.
