For a relatively young designer, Jonathan Anderson sure knows how to put on a spectacle. At his JW Anderson Fall 2019 show, he put his models, as well as his audience, on a cloud 9 dream of exaggerated silhouettes and modernized elegance. With elongated shapes and contained volumes, each exit was more show-stopping than the next. Swiveling coats, floor-length capes, bubble shapes, and a whole lot of draping provided the much-needed drama against a flurry of streetwear and streamline tailoring. One particular stand-out was a draped tan bubble ball gown with a ruched dropped waist and a cape that connected the back to the skirt. Not only was this beautifully excessive, but it showed Anderson‘s masterful technique in craft and in modernizing what’s already a classic silhouette. Even the more disheveled ensembles—from the open-seamed long-hemmed trousers to the deconstructed but nipped-waisted coats—had an elegance to them that was cool and complete. This was yet another highlight from one of the most bombastic designers in London!
