Junya Watanabe went as classic as he can go for his Fall 2019 Menswear show. The designer, known for his avant-garde antics on the runway and putting a bit of quirk into his clothes, sent out 44 looks of pure classic menswear, from the tailored tweeds and denim jeans to logo sweaters and English checks. The twist? These are all for men over 40! In a stunning display of ageless style, all of Watanabe’s models were of the silver-haired high-cheekboned variety, evoking what he called “silver swagger.” Tropes of vintage yet youthful style, such as biker jackets and sporty parkas were made to look all grown up and refined, perfect for the gentlemen who walked the runway and those who can actually afford such clothes. In some looks, Watanabe incorporated his signature patchwork approach, combing a cotton double-breasted jacket with leather sleeves or sewing multi-colored patches on a pair of denim jeans. And while his clothes this season aren’t as revolutionary as one might expect from him, his message of inclusivity and age-diversity was important. The middle-aged man now has a place in high fashion!
