Jonathan Cohen looked to his native homeland of Mexico to be his inspiration for his Fall 2019 Collection. The CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up recently had a trip back to the Central American country, and when he came home, he brought back with him some of their most colorful and intricate textiles. Evidently, he used them on his collection this season, cutting them up into tailored jackets, flared day dresses, and bohemian-style evening gowns. One could feel the spirit of Frida Kahlo with all the eclectic imagery and the mix of masculine and feminine styles. The first model herself looked like a reincarnation of the legendary artist, wearing a floral-printed tuxedo jacket and mid-length skirt. The artistry here was also noteworthy, especially the patchworked frocks that were easy to wear but still had a tinge of avant-garde flair. And in a time where Mexico is at the forefront of a heated political landscape, Cohen was fearless in highlighting both his heritage and his birthland’s culture onto the American fashion stage!
