John Elliott and his co-designer for womenswear, Cara Campagnoli, described their Fall 2019 collection as “Very Hitchcockian.” We agree! We were scared out of our wits looking at that poorly-designed abysmal seasonal offering. A lot of elements were downright confusing, and those which were clear looked extremely low-quality. From the first look alone—a military green suit-like sportswear ensemble in nylon—we surmised that the “Hitchcockian” part was an attempt to combine modern sportswear with traditionally classic suiting. The idea was interesting but the execution was downright awful. Not to mention most of the sportswear they did offer bordered on athleisure, which was, though vaguely similar, was another market entirely. Those draped activewear-like numbers looked completely out-of-place, especially amidst such heavily-layered and bulky looks. And since they were styled without any bottoms, they also looked rather vulgar! To be fair, the designs were fascinating, but it was the overall quality in construction that really pulled it all down. From the puckering in the seams and the scrunched up materials to the faded quality of the textiles, everything about the show screamed poor! And that is the last thing you’d want to hear from a supposed luxury fashion label!
