The woman behind Larkspur & Hawk

Emily Satloff - Founder of Larkspur & Hawk Jewelry
Emily Satloff – Founder of Larkspur & Hawk Jewelry

Emily Satloff, the founder of Larkspur & Hawk has embraced the 18th century techniques in her creations. The technique known as the ‘colored foil technique’ from Georgian era was revived and revitalized by Satloff. She gave life to this 18th century jewelry technique and merged it in today’s trends and modernity. The result? A unique creation that combines both the historical and contemporary vibe in fine jewelry. Her jewelry is a mixture of rich colors and depths that will definitely define every woman’s outfit. Every movement a woman will make while wearing a Larkspur & Hawk is a shifting of colors (one side topaz, the other side, a bright pink dancing hue). These all rooted from the creative idea of the founder, Emily Satloff. Her vision is somewhat a reflection of every woman’s dream for fine jewelry – timeless, classy, and elegant.

Emily Satloff has a broad background in art and design. She has a graduate studies in decorative arts and earned substantial experience as a curator at The New York Historical Society and as a curatorial consultant for The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Her formal education and exposure in the art industry developed in her a deep appreciation for decorative pieces coming from different periods and era. Since then, she was able to develop a huge interest in jewelry and decided to establish her very own pieces significantly inspired from the past. The period that has an enormous impact on her is the Georgian era. She was drawn with how the designs during this period can be both romantic yet subtle. The high-low quality of Georgian jewelry are truly compelling that it can be considered casual and precious at the same time.

A revival of Georgian era in jewelry making

During the 18th century Georgian period, our ancestors came up with a definitive technique treating stones and gems using foil. It is a method of artificial alteration or enhancement of the physical properties of gems to create more appealing pieces of jewelry. In Larkspur & Hawk, the art of foiling became a decorative strategy in making the brand’s fine jewelry collections. Larkspur & Hawk came to appreciate the amount of time, effort and skill in perfecting the foil technique. Accordingly, a skilled jeweler is required to be able to come up with a précised and perfectly crafted foiled piece. This technique has been the cornerstone of the brand’s popularity in jewelry making.

Even if the brand has become popular using the foil technique, it also introduced the closed-back setting ensuring that the piece can be turned inside out. This method guarantees that a piece will still look smooth and polished from the back. By using this technique, Larkspur & Hawk’s pieces are oftentimes reversible. Still inspired by the Georgian period, the brand also employs the ‘gold wash’ technique. It is the brand’s method of covering silver materials with  an 18K yellow, rose gold and gold to make the material look more appealing.

A combination of technical expertise & creative process

Truly, the collections of Larkspur & Hawk underwent thorough and highly technical process in order to ensure that all pieces are of high durability and made with such précised expertise. Nevertheless, the brand does not only master the technical perfection but also the creative and imaginative aspect of designing.

Most of the pieces are made of fun and brightly colored painted foils which are expertly handcrafted from metals and stones. The founder, herself, ensures that each and every collection celebrated the old-fashioned technique of foil system while keeping of with the extravagant and contemporary styles of today’s fine jewelry. The art and decorative background of the designer are accentuated on how each piece are created and designed. She ensures that pieces under every collection are having the touch of modern sensibility, antiquity and timeless beauty.
