Although he’s known for his show-stopping red carpet dresses, Gilles Mendel had a different territory in mind for Pre-Fall 2019: the dance floor. Inspired by artist Danh Vo’s copper-finished Lady Liberty sculptures, he entitled J. Mendel’s pre-season offering as “Armor Without Armor”—the armor being what women wear when they go out and have a good time. And what do they wear? Shimmering metallics, ruffles and pleats, and a whole lot of fur. The latter was incorporated as the outerwear part of the line, but whether one pairs them with the more tailored pieces, mini-dresses, or long gowns, their impact remains the same. Pleats, of which Mendel handmade onto his billowy silhouettes, were extra light so that the dresses will float and willow about to the dancing of the wearer. As for the evening—the usual highlights of any J. Mendel collection—dazzling shades of copper, silver, and gold make for eye-catching and astounding numbers. Be it on the dancefloor or the red carpet, these frocks are sure to shine against the disco lights or the flashes of the paparazzi.
