First class timepieces have always been one of the gentleman’s signature luxury pieces. During the 19th century, when the luxury industry was already booming,
men of the upper class all had their own timepieces. It was considered a fashion staple and status symbol of wealth and power. But before the wristwatches of today, theirs were chained pocket watches. Today, the classic pocket watch receives a modern makeover courtesy of IWC Schaffhausen‘s new model: a tribute to legendary watchmaker Josef Pallweber in celebration of the Swiss brand’s 150 years.

Pros
The watch is a marriage between the old and new in the most beautiful and modern way. With the traditional fork cock movement, the new model exemplifies the original pocket watches by the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer more than a century ago. A more classic variety sees shimmering red-gold encasing a white lacquer dial with black numerals. But if one wants a more modern version, there’s also a silver steel case with a cobalt blue dial. Whichever one chooses to purchases, both capture the luxury and richness of the IWC Schaffhausen as well as the history it offers in one modern model.
Cons
Pocket watches are from a different era, and while it’s novel to offer them in more contemporary versions, it’s yet to be seen if they’ll be appreciated by a new consumer audience. The vast differences in dials may prove to be confusing for the modern man who’s used to having his watch having a standard face. This particular model may simply be better for fashionable and aesthetic purposes rather than its main function of telling the time. As important as design is when it comes to timepieces, however, today’s consumers need practicality as well.
