Timepieces are some of the most beautiful practical pieces in the luxury retail business. Beyond their fashionable facades, these premier watches function as time-tellers, calendars, stopwatches, and more. Normally, the fashion industry is often criticized for being a shallow and unnecessary industry. But as luxury timepieces prove time and time again, glamorous items can still be of much use. IWC Schaffhausen’s Pilot Chronograph IW377710, for instance, is a very practical piece indeed.

Release Date and Price

Release date: January 2016
Price when reviewed: $5,950

During SIHH 2016, IWC Schaffhausen debuted their new collection of Pilot watches. A lot of them were reinvented from classic models, such as the “Petit Prince” and “Spitfire.” The Pilot Chronograph IW377710 was a particular standout due to its faithful design and effervescent face. Each piece of it costs around $5,057.

Specifications:

  • Diameter: 43mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Water Resistant: 60 meters
  • Power Reserve: 44 hours
  • Frequency: 28,800 vph
  • Strap: Stainless steel
  • Buckle: Folding clasp with push button

Pros

Practicality dictates legible details, upon which the Pilot Chronograph IW377710 is rich of. The original’s triple-date window is replaced with only a single-date window, making this feature much more vivid and obvious. This iteration is also a lot cleaner because the 5-minute numerals that abound the minute markers were taken out. With their stark-white hues contrasting a sophisticated black (or silver) dial, all the details pop out and can be easily seen even from a considerable distance.

Cons

While its functions will prove it to be a first-class watch for many clients, the Pilot Chronograph IW377710’s overall design aesthetic leaves a lot to be desired. Its very ace is its legibility, but beyond that, there’s nothing new to fawn over. The watch’s design is as classic as any Pilot’s watch can be, which ultimately makes for a slightly boring offering from such a premier luxury label.
