The holiday season is already upon us, and Burberry’s not one to miss the celebrations.
Now the chief creative officer for Burberry, Riccardo Tisci is not breaking any traditions. In the past, we’ve seen splendid campaigns from Christopher Bailey, celebrating the holidays in a uniquely British way. Tisci is offering the same, although with an undeniable modern touch that we have also witnessed in his inaugural collection. Respecting the legacy of the brand, he has kept its spirit, though, through its icons that distinguish it from the rest—the tartan, the trench coat, among others—and the personalities best associated with Burberry. Arguably Britain’s best known supermodel, Naomi Campbell is the highlight of Burberry’s latest holiday campaign. And there’s even more to see—Campbell shares the spotlight Valerie Morris-Campbell, who happens to be her equally gorgeous mother.
The mother-daughter duo were called upon to join a group of famous British icons, which include Matt Smith, M.I.A., Kristin Scott Thomas and Juno Calypso. Calypso worked as both a model and a director for the teaser set of photos as well as the video that shows both her and Tisci’s vision of this year’s holiday campaign in motion. The pictures were remarkable in themselves, showing the models in portraits that were slightly and intentionally distorted. Ultimately though, they were only peeks of what awaits. The film entitled Close Your Eyes and Think of Christmas was revealed in November 13, with Morris-Campbell and Campbell concluding the clip.
The two-minute presentation was Juno’s interpretation of British Christmas, both the fantasy and the reality parts of it, the latter including the factors that get in the way of a seamless celebration (weather, delayed public transportation) as well as values that emerge in such gatherings. As anticipated, the models were clad with the latest Burberry gear that stay true to the code of the brand while injecting a taste for the streets—the pieces were taken directly from the brand’s latest show. Naomi and her mother close the film, proud and gorgeous in Burberry and Vivienne Westwood. The heritage brand has collaborated with the celebrated British designer, and this is the preview.
Campbell is more than happy to be sharing the experience with her mom, who has also worked as a model previously. This is not the first that we have seen them together, as the two beauties have walked alongside each other in the past. The Burberry campaign is special though, considering that the brand has a long history of working with the supermodel. Tisci, who according to Campbell knew her mom, asked Morris-Campbell to join the project, making the supermodel’s ties to the brand more familial than before.
Despite the very British campaign, Burberry’s holiday spirit can be felt elsewhere. Recently, it has made its flagship store in New York more festive, filling it with Christmas symbols. It was hard to keep the attention from the stars who graced it, however. Naomi Campbell attended and stunned with her black lingerie-like dress.
