There’s a stark difference between a sport-suit and a sporty suit. The former is a specialized garment specifically made for a particular athletic sport, while the latter is a more relaxed and streetwise version of the classic suit. Another distinction is that the latter was very much present at the Hugo Boss Fall 2019 show. This brand is all about classic tailoring, even when throwing in a sense of ease and sportiness into the mix. This season, chief brand officer and design director Ingo Wilts emphasized a more modern and youthful interpretation of the classic suit, which had traditional tailoring interspersed with classic sportswear. Underneath a well-cut camel suit, for instance, was either a multi-colored striped sweater or a tan hoodie. Palette-wise, the collection focused on monochrome looks, bringing forth the kind of controlled sophistication of past eras, particularly those of the 80s and 90s. This was luxury at its finest and no other label could have done it quite like the Boss!
