Women’s designers pulling out masculine tropes for their womenswear collections isn’t new. The likes of Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney, even the legendary Coco Chanel did it to revolutionize the way women dress today. But as these veterans and icons combined both aesthetics to make a serious point, Katie Hillier and Luella Bartley of Hillier Bartley went this route for a bit of fancy fun. For their resort 2019, the young design duo reworked classic silhouettes of the famous Savile Row and made them slouchy and sensual instead of rigid and strict. An emerald green satin ensemble, for example, looked more fitting under disco lights instead of inside a more traditional chandelier-lit ballroom. A checkered double-breasted suit was also made to be worn slightly off-shoulder, giving the woman ample opportunity to show much, but not all. What used to be a fashionable discipline to cover people up, this new and exciting London-based brand has turned over its head to create a sexier and more mischievous look. It’s exciting to see what classic look they’ll touch upon next.
