It’s not every day that a designer gets inspired by the mythical tale of Icarus, but that is what exactly happened with Clare Waight Keller when she designed Givenchy’s Pre-Fall 2019 Collection. In a way, one can say that Keller’s current journey at the famous fashion house bears some similarities to the Greek myth—in it that both Keller and Icarus are both trying to reach highly difficult (almost impossible) goals. One is flying towards the sun, and the other is continuing a decades-old heritage of haute couture. And while one ended in failure, the other is more or less succeeding, as proven by this new offering. One can see that the tailoring here is extremely precise, which is one of the label’s many indelible signatures. However, the streamlined quality of it all didn’t take away the romanticism that was put on these clothes, such as a floral print here, a pop of color there, and a mixture of various textures. Icarus, in many ways, was a story about innovation, and how appropriate it was that Waight Keller was inspired by this myth when she herself innovated many of Givenchy fashionable legacies.
