Erdem is all about historical references and classic costuming. His flair for modernizing old-school codes of elegant dressing has charmed multiple celebrities, from Kate Bosworth to Gwyneth Paltrow. For spring 2019, his sophisticated offering had a subversive twist to it that’s less traditionally refined and more mysterious and slightly erotic. Inspired by Victorian-era drag queens, his collection was more elaborate than usual. Lace-veiled hats, long opera gloves, and big bows decorated his signature array of floral brocade dresses and well-tailored suits. His silhouettes this season were also bigger and braver, such as the pale blue asymmetric balloon dress that dominated the runway, contrasted beautifully by its big black bows. Just when one thought that Erdem has reached the peak of his career, he gave the fashion world something completely unexpected, but still as elegant as ever.
