While many prefer luxury items to be simple, subdued, and refined, there are people who like it flashy, fabulous, and in-your-face. This love for overstated glamour gave birth to such trends like maximalism and logomania, both of which exemplify what it means to show off your expensive clothes and other products. A number of brands thrive from such excess, who cover their items with their iconic logos and world-renowned labels. Aside from pride of heritage, it’s become a marketing ploy to sell more products. These are the likes of Versace, Armani, Marc Jacobs, Dior, Chanel, and many more. One of them is also MCM, also known as Michael Cromer Munich.

MCM Worldwide is one of the most famous luxury leather goods labels in the world. They’re known for their caramel brown-colored bags and purses monogrammed with the company’s famous logo. Like several of its contemporaries, almost all their pieces are monogrammed with the brand’s famous logo, displaying their name and brand identity for all the world to see. Although they may not be as universally known as the likes of Louis Vuitton and Gucci, MCM Worldwide rivals such big names in terms of quality and logomania approach.

The MCM logo

MCM

The MCM brand logo has become as famous as Louis Vuitton’s LV monogram and Chanel’s interlocking C’s. It’s comprised of the letters MCM for Michael Cromer Munich, displayed as roman numeral-like figures. The brand has stated that this approach also touched upon the Greeks’ symbol for victory, in line with their successful position in the luxury goods game. Underneath the letters laurel leaves tied with a ribbon in the center—an homage to King Ludwig I and his passion for neoclassicism. At times, the logo is accompanied by a diamond, symbolizing the diamonds of the Bavarian flag. All of these principles come together for one iconic logo that has been seen by billions of people worldwide.

While other luxury leather goods brands thrive on handbags and purses, the main items of MCM are their backpacks. This is why the brand is embraced by the youth more than the average mature consumer audience of luxury labels. The brand has transformed what is commonly perceived to be a mundane bag for school children into one of the most coveted items in the fashion industry. Aside from the classic monogram, they offer their backpacks a variety of styles. They’re available in studded black leather, pastel hues, graffiti-painted, and many more. More than just a high-quality piece, their items have become status symbols of wealth, power, and cool.

Brand History

In 1976, the MCM Worldwide luxury leather goods brand came to be. It was founded by Michael Cromer Munich, a German designer and businessman. The label specialized in high-quality bags, purses, suitcases, and luggage that rivaled that of Louis Vuitton and Gucci. It became one of the biggest brands of the 1980’s, especially since during that time, excess and logomania were the hottest trends. The brand’s monogrammed pieces were a hit with people who wanted to show off their wealth and worth through their expensive items and clothing. By the 1990’s, the label reached their peak and was selling in over 250 stores worldwide.

Two years later, in 1995, founder Michael Cromer was investigated for charged with tax evasion, which led to a scandal that besmirched the company name. As a result, a lot of investors pulled out from the company and customers refused to buy MCM products anymore. In an attempt for the brand to survive, the company sold their stakes to a multitude of willing investors. In 2005, South Korean luxury holdings group Sungjoo Group acquired the brand and relaunched it in Berlin, Germany the year after, in 2006. The label soon amassed loyal following again, and they became the premier luxury leather goods label they once were.
