Who knew Derek Lam could trot out something almost haute couture-worthy? His Fall 2019 collection was so refined and well-made that you’d think it was made by an atelier in Paris with artisans who’ve honed their craft for many decades. With such precise and sharp tailoring and excellent construction, Lam’s latest line was among one of the best of the lot this season. It wasn’t just that it had a luxurious sophistication to it, but despite its geometric shapes and rigid lines, they were all still wearable. His take on voluminous forms would make even Balenciaga green with envy! People often forget that this kind of sportswear is still, also, streetwear. It’s not the kind that’s hyped up on social media nowadays, but it’s certainly the kind that we’d like to see more from other designers and on the street. Just think how major it would look like seeing women walking down the street in those massive trapeze-shaped trench coats! Or think how elegant you’d look in that soft round-sleeved cotton top. Plaid-printed layered outerwear is also bound to steal some attention from on-lookers. And the leather dress for an elegant evening affair? That’ll be a winner! Come fall, these are the pieces we’re most excited to see (and buy!).
