Sportswear should be more about movement whereas many labels nowadays who take on the trend focus more on it aesthetic rather than function. It’s ironic, then, that a cocktail-centric designer like David Koma would be the one to beautifully translate movement in his collection for Spring 2019. Inspired by flamenco, as well as the films of Academy Award-winning director Pedro Almodovar, he sent out an array of frilly dresses and separates that urged the wearers to dance the night away. Despite the frills, however, this line looked far from being girly, and actually had a strict sense of feminine confidence. The fascinating way the clothes moved as the models walked down the runway was a testament to Koma’s exact engineering of fabric and exquisite skills in construction. Sensuality was also present here, by way of strategic cut-outs and sheer polka-dot panels that amped up the Spanish flavor. By the end of the show, pleasant surprises came in shimmering evening gowns, a first for this cocktail-wear designer, which were both show-stopping enough to make huge impacts on the red carpet.
