Covergirl Katy Kat Hydrating Matte Lipstick Review

Covergirl Katy Kat Hydrating Matte Lipstick Review
Product Description
Covergirl and Katy Perry’s Katy Kat Matte Lipstick is nothing groundbreaking or revolutionary, but for what it is, it’s pretty solid. In this collection of lipsticks, you get some very interesting shades in a formula that’s comfortable and hydrating. Of course, the formula isn’t perfect. Between some issues with pigmentation and wear time, there are some hoops you have to jump through to get the best possible use out of this product. But otherwise, it’s a fun product, and it may be worth checking out on your next trip to the drugstore.

The Katy Kat Matte Lipsticks are a celebrity makeup collaboration between the Covergirl brand and popstar Katy Perry. These lipsticks promise to be “velvety soft and luscious-feeling.” To that end, it has moderate success, though we’re not absolutely sold on the whole collection.

These lipsticks are available in a cute collection of colors that include classics like pink and red, as well as statement colors like Cosmo Kitty, a darker lavender which is a standout in the collection, and Perry Panther, which is a strong charcoal color for vampier looks. The best thing about the formula of the lipstick is how comfortable the finish is. While not the “demi-matte” the claims of this lipstick promise, it certainly feels good for extended wear on the lips. It also helps that the formula gives a strong dose of hydration to the lips, so you never feel like your lips are heavy or dry.

The biggest sin of the product, on the other hand, is the patchiness of the application. It’s not crazy patchy, but it’s patchy enough that the bolder shades have some problems looking clean and precise when applied. This ties into the lipstick’s overall lack of pigmentation. If you want any sort of opacity in your lipsticks, you’d really need to get in there, and apply numerous coats. The wear time is also problematic. While the product does wear out evenly and gracefully, it’s worth noting that it doesn’t stay on for a particularly long time, so you’d have to retouch throughout the day, which is a larger concern for the bold shades.

In its own way, the Katy Kat Matte Lipstick is impressive, especially for a drugstore product—and a celebrity collaboration at that. While that may be the case, as a lipstick, we don’t feel like we’re going to be picking it up very often just because it’s so inconsistent, and it does need a good amount of hand-holding through the day, just to make sure it keeps looking its best.

SUITABLE FOR: All skin types.
