There’s only so much one can do with denim, but it takes an incredibly artistic eye to be able to transform it beyond its industrial look. Such a feat was achieved by Nicole and Michael Colovos, whose Pre-Fall 2019 Collection was all about refining the famous fabric into a variety of looks. Although they’ve played with denim before, this season stands out as their most sophisticated offering with the fabric yet. The silhouettes are a lot more grown-up, thanks in part of the well-cut jackets and sleek cotton shirts that were paired with the jeans. Although the shapes are more relaxed, there’s also that unmistakable structure that’s super chic these days, increasing the elegance in most of the looks. And speaking of elegance, it was most present with the silk pieces that were printed to look like denim, offering a peak of the true versatility of the material if and when it gets to be molded and cut into different garments. Who knew that denim could look so mature? And the way the Colovos duo worked with it just show that there’s still a lot more exploring to do in fashion!
