Clinique Almost Lipstick Hydrating Lip Stain Review

Clinique Almost Lipstick Hydrating Lip Stain Review
Product Description
Having been awarded a spot in ELLE Magazine’s Hall of Fame for “Best Beauty Products Since 1985,” Clinique’s Almost Lipstick has a lot to live up to—and live up to these expectations, it does. This smooth-textured product is a seeming lip balm-lip stain hybrid that gives the right amount of color for healthy lips, as well as doses of hydration. Now, it may require some layering to get the right color for you, and it does ask for consistent touch-ups throughout the day, but otherwise, we get why this is an award-winning product, and we can definitely recommend it to anyone.

We’re free to call it a lip balm, a lip gloss, or a lip stain, but the Almost Lipstick from Clinique knows no definite categories. Overall, this product is somewhere in between a lip balm and a lip stain considering color, coverage, and overall texture, but it rejects those categories outright, and goes with an effect it makes its own. This product has been recognized by ELLE Magazine in its Hall of Fame, as one of the “Best Beauty Products Since 1985.” High praise, but does it deliver for us?

This product goes on so smoothly. No dragging, no skipping, just effortless, seemingly frictionless gliding over the lips. It applies better than some lip balms out there, too, which is no joke. Color-wise, the payoff is a little similar to a lip stain, hence us considering it a lip stain. The coverage is perfect for bare makeup days, when you just don’t need heavy coverage on your lips, but still want a touch of color to make the lips look healthy and alive. The product also feels very hydrating, similar to a lip balm. While wearing it, the lips feel nice and moisturized which, combined with the perfect color payoff, makes the lips look plumper, too.

Now, there are a few downsides to consider with this product. Of course, we mentioned the sheerness of the product’s coverage. This can also be a downside if you’re looking for a specific richness of color because it really is that sheer. In order to get more opaque color, you’re going to have to do a lot of layering. Also, the hold of this product on the lips is quite similar to lip balm too, in that you’re in for consistent product reapplication if you’re going to be doing any drinking or anything. The good news there is that like a stain, some of the color stays on the lips even after the coat of product has worn off, so reapplication isn’t all that difficult.

So does Clinique’s Almost Lipstick deliver? For us, it’s a definite, resounding yes, especially if you know what you’re in for with this product. If you get this product expecting it to be anything like a lipstick, you’re not going to have a great time. But if you are able to manage your expectations, this should be a fun product to use for “no makeup makeup” days.

SUITABLE FOR: All skin types.
