Fashion shows, especially haute couture ones, can easily be compared to the circus. Both exude a certain old-school charm, regardless of how modern the shows are nowadays. They also present the very best of human talents, one in terms of exceptional craftsmanship and the other in terms of defying the limits of human ability. It’s no wonder, then, that Christian Dior’s Spring 2019 haute couture collection had the perfect theme: a glamorous circus. Inside a vintage-like circus tent, London-based all-female acrobat troupe Mimbre performed their awe-inspiring set of thrills as beautifully-dressed models walked among them. Here, almost all facets of the circus were covered: Harlequin-esque mini-dresses, campy and clownish quirky looks, and finely tailored ensembles perfect for the ring mistresses who lead the show. The latter was arguably the most interesting part of the show, as they harken back to Mr. Dior’s own origins of strictly-tailored haute couture Bar suits. A few knitted pieces also gave color and youth to the old-school-inspired offering. Needless to say, this brave act of showmanship proves that creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri is at the top of her game when it comes to haute couture.
