When designers decide that their aesthetic needs to grow up, there’s usually some tailoring involved. Alas, that’s what happened with Brock Collection’s Pre-Fall 2019. The husband-and-wife design duo, Kristopher and Laura Brock, is known for their elegant floral frocks and romantic cocktail dresses. But this season, they incorporated a strict sense of pragmatism to their new line. Beginning with strong tailoring—a barrage of skirt suits and shapely coats— these were fascinating day pieces which were quite striking with their grey neutral color palette. One wouldn’t have thought this was a Brock Collection line by these looks alone, except maybe for the hanging ribbons on the sleeve hems—a soft touch of their signature romance. As the colors became more pastel and the florals started coming in, however, it was back to their old territory. But even the more evening-appropriate looks were a lot less decorated than what’s expected from them. As a whole, this was still more of a daywear offering than eveningwear, which may just be their meal ticket to gaining more retail success.
