Elegance is found in simplicity, but also in Brandon Maxwell’s Fall 2019 show. This season, it was all about clean lines and refined tailoring that’s been his bread and butter since he debuted in the fashion scene not too long ago. But perhaps the highlight of this collection was the fact that it had a lot more daywear than his previous offerings. There were exceptional tinges of sportswear that were entirely sophisticated, such as the sports bra paired with a well-cut “Le Smoking” suit that started the show and a stark white puffer-looking faux fur jacket worn with long trousers. The simplicity was refined on all levels, which for some might be normal, but on a Brandon Maxwell runway, seemed shortsighted. Maxwell’s strength was his eveningwear, which ironically, in this line, was the weakest of the lot. There’s a fine line between simple and basic, and while his cocktail frocks and ball gowns were elegantly simple in seasons past, here they were just basic. They essentially just looked like clothes with no creativity whatsoever. Perhaps the worst look is the satin green ensemble that was so ill-fitting one wouldn’t have known it was Brandon Maxwell-made. As did a few elongated sheaths that clearly needed some steaming before being sent down the runway. Here’s to hoping the designer gets back his ‘joie de vivre’ back next season!
