A lot of times in fashion, the designers themselves uphold the very essence of their luxury fashion brands. It makes their company more convincing to clients who are going to buy into what the designer thinks upholds. There was Coco Chanel, who confidently wore her own iconic suit to events and galas. There’s Hubert de Givenchy, himself an elegant man just like his clothes. These designers understand that in order to really make an impact and make a difference to the customers, they themselves have to personify their brand identity. In modern day, a designer like this is Tory Burch.

More than wearing her own stuff, Tory Burch knows that she is the face of her brand, and acts accordingly to the lifestyle it represents. She designs for refined women of mature taste and timeless style—a person she’s been since fashion first saw her. Like her clothes, she is understated yet beautiful, eye-catching yet serene. Her customers buy her clothes because they see the authenticity of the label, and each piece was intricately-designed, making them worth the price. Today, the Tory Burch brand has become one of the most successful in all of the industry, which is a feat considering it’s a relatively young company.

Prominence in Retail

Since she introduced her brand on the Oprah Winfrey Show in 2005, a lot of prominent retailers have been eyeing her. Now, her label is carried in over 3,000 retailers and department stores across the globe. The likes of Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Bergdorf Goodman, and Nordstrom carry her brand in the United States while Harvey Nichols and Harrods carry her in the UK. In Paris, the renowned Galeries Lafayette sell Tory Burch items. In Asia, Lane Crawford in Hong Kong and Isetan in Japan also carry the label in their respective stores. The company has also opened over 200 flagship stores in the world, opening in cities such as Rome, Paris, Seoul, Tokyo, and Los Angeles, among others.

Personal History and Brand Foundation

Tory Burch was born to a well-off family in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania on June 17, 1966. Her parents were already part of the celebrity scene, as her father dated icons Grace Kelly and Joan Bennett and her mother dated screen legends Steve McQueen and Marlon Brando before marrying each other. She majored in art at the University of Pennsylvania where she graduated in 1988. Soon after, she moved to New York to start her fashion career, working for a Yugoslavian designer named Zoran, and as an editorial assistant for Harper’s Bazaar. She gained even more connections in the industry when she worked as PR and advertising for brands such as Vera Wang, Ralph Lauren, and Loewe.

She founded her namesake company in 2004, opening a boutique in New York City’s Nolita district. She eventually caught the eye of TV host Oprah Winfrey, who invited her to talk about her collections in April 2005. She received immediate attention from that guesting, and soon, she was becoming a bestseller for many retailers who carried her items. Eventually, Tory Burch expanded worldwide, amassing gargantuan commercial success in several international markets. Her name has become a staple in fashion and is one of the most copied brands in the entire industry.

Subsidiary Lines

Eventually, Tory Burch became a lifestyle brand, opening up a series of subsidiary lines. In 2013, she introduced her fragrance and beauty lines in collaboration with Estée Lauder. She has since released a number of scents such as “Love Relentlessly” and her signature Eau de Parfum. She also released a home line, complete with decor and fine furnishings. In 2014, she partnered with Fitbit Flex activity-tracking device to create a technological accessories collection. A year later, in 2015, she launched Tory Sport, her sportswear subsidiary line. It started as an online diffusion brand but eventually opened retail stores in New York, the Hamptons, and Dallas, Texas.

Celebrity Clientele

A lot of prominent women have worn Tory Burch in their everyday lives. It all started with Oprah Winfrey, who introduced her to a global consumer audience through her famous talk show. She has also become one of the designer’s most famous clients. Actresses such as Michelle Trachtenberg, Jennifer Garner, and Hilary Duff have all been spotted sporting the label. Pop stars like Kylie Minogue and Taylor Swift have also been seen dressed in Tory Burch. One of the most prominent customers of the designer has to be former US First Lady Michelle Obama, who’ve worn Tory Burch dress countless times during her husband’s presidency.

Tory Burch stands as one who represents the essence of her brand. The label has become one of the most known in the entire fashion global market. It’s also one of the most counterfeited, which is, in one way or another, a sign that the company has become a retail giant.
