It’s easy to dismiss various designers and creative directors to be copying the “Celine by Phoebe Philo” route. But what if one of her proteges is actually leading a brand right now? Daniel Lee used to be part of Phoebe Philo’s Celine team before he was named Bottega Veneta‘s newest creative director. He has insurmountable amounts of pressure on him, having been under Philo and following in the footsteps of the great Tomas Maier. It’s easy to think he’ll choke on his first collection, but fortunately, he didn’t. For the Italian brand’s Pre-Fall 2019 collection, Lee brought back the attention to the house’s high-quality skills and textiles. The most luxurious leathers were cut into A-line dresses and skirts, as well as big bags for those planning to go to an elegant affair right after work. In essence, this line had all the practicality of Philo’s aesthetics with the elegance of Maier’s genius creativity. But will women who loved both designers embrace this one? Only time can tell.
