Birkenstock rarely had any fashion credibility. The brand and their iconic shoes have simply become mainstays on the general retail world. Yet their new spring 2019 line—done in collaboration with Rick Owens—struck a chord in many of the high fashion elite that used to look down on them. Suddenly, the German label’s latest offering looked desirable and was hyped across the fashion press as witnessed the fashion show at Pitti Uomo in Milan. Rick Owens’ accompanying neutral-toned collection of shapeless sheaths and draped cargo pants helped some of the candy-colored footwear stand out more. These shoes were no longer the plain mall-fillers one would just pass by, but rather actual luxury leather goods that can invoke a sense of desire from upscale customers.
