What is it about masculine fashion tropes that fascinate female designers so much? For Bassike founders Deborah Sams and Mary Lou Ryan, there’s a shapeliness to menswear that they want to translate onto their womenswear. Almost all of their looks this season exhibit their own distinct forms which, at first glance, are quite powerful. Even their softly-cut pieces, such as the oversized hoodies and denim tops, are dominant in their silhouettes yet are easy to wear. The more tailored ensembles, however, evoke an 80s feel, a decade upon which, while men were in power, women were more dressed for it. But this season, it’s “Wolf of Wall Street” style that Sams and Ryan incorporated onto their offering, not the Joan Collins “Dynasty” look that other designers have gone gaga over. There’s a minimalist edge to their outfits, more akin to Jil Sander own band of simplicity that was also a huge part of the 80s fashion scene. Still, these pieces look and are contemporary, and the best thing about them, according to the design duo, is that you can style them however you like and you’ll still end up looking like a boss!
