Every once in a while, a great fashion house surprises the world with something completely unexpected. A number of couture houses, particularly in Paris, have been around for decades, some even centuries, and built long-lasting legacies that are kept alive by the great names in fashion today. Such as the founders were during their time, the creative directors that head these labels now are also fashion revolutionaries. Today, Demna Gvasalia from Balenciaga is at the top of the food chain, and the Paris-based label’s new Speed Knit sneakers prove it.

Balenciaga’s stylish new trainers debuted on the international stage during the Parisian house’s spring-summer 2018 fashion show last October 2017. They became available for public purchase a month later through a limited edition release. The Speed Knit sneakers became one of the hottest shoes during the Paris Fashion Week, with publications like Vogue and Elle referring to the pair as the “Shoes Of The Year.” They sell at $750 a pair.
Balenciaga’s new creative director Demna Gvasalia of Vetements-fame is known for his unique, pragmatic, and edgy take on streetwear and he has since incorporated such styles for the classic couture house. With its unique yet fascinating silhouette and unusual choice of fabrication, the label’s Speed Knit trainers exemplify Gvasalia’s sense of humor and boldness when it comes to fashion design. Even though the Knit is not the first Speed Trainer of the brand, it has developed an identity all its own through the luxurious and somewhat groundbreaking material.
Although the pair is one of the hottest items in fashion right now, it risks being a momentary success. The shoes don’t have the classic and sophisticated touch that both the founder, Cristobal Balenciaga and one of Gvasalia’s predecessors, Nicolas Ghesquiere, have. It may be the most popular shoes right now, but there’s no saying that it will still sell a few seasons later on. It does, however, fit into the streetwear Instagram-worthy look that is trending at the moment, and it’s giving the house of Balenciaga a lot of good revenue.
