From time to time, a luxury brand reinvents its classics to remind people why they are a beloved label in the first place. They instill a sense of nostalgia for those familiar with the classics, while they introduce their well-known pieces to a whole new generation of luxury consumers. By reinventing certain timeless pieces, luxury brands are also staying true to their mark on the highly competitive world of luxury retail. Release date: January 2018
Price when reviewed: $24,200 – $35,910

Audemars Piguet introduced their Royal Oak model back in 1972 and it has since become a classic in their roster. The watch was unique in its chunky silhouette, especially since it debuted at a time when timepieces were becoming simpler and sleeker. Although the model was initially ridiculed, critics and clients warmed up to it through the years, eventually becoming a favorite in the world of haute horology. The new Royal Oak Quartz version was subsequently introduced back in January 2018 during the famous watch show SIHH. Depending on the finish and embellishments, the model’s price ranges from $24,200 to $35,910

Specifications:

  • Diameter: 33mm
  • Movement: Automatic
  • Water Resistant: 50 meters
  • Frequency: 32, 768 Hz
  • Strap: Stainless steel or Frosted white gold
  • Buckle: Folding clasp

Pros

The watch’s symmetry helps it stand out against other models in both Audemars Piguet’s roster as well as other pieces from different brands. The Royal Oak timepiece is known for its perfect octagon shape, sometimes emphasized by a sparkling diamond-encrusted bezel that evokes a more regal look. Reinventing the model for female customers, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer offers it in frosted gold or silver finishes or in shimmering rose gold for a feminine and slightly quirky touch. Additionally, its quartz movement helps it stay fresh and modern amidst new and exciting new models from other companies.

Cons

The problems the Royal Oak model faced back in the 70’s are still quite evident in this new reinvention. Its geometric lines still project a serious image and boring image, particularly when compared to other watches in Audemars Piguet’s roster. Although the model is redesigned to be thinner than the original iteration, the watch also still looks chunky and clunky even though it’s not. It’s hardly the sleekest watch out there, which makes it problematic as it is a timepiece geared towards women.
