Minimalism doesn’t always have to be strict and rigid. At times it can be cool, fun, and a little bit edgy, as proven by Assembly New York’s Fall 2019 collection. This season, Greg Armas focused on such brooding characters for his latest line. He allowed a sense of mystery and seduction to dominate his widely simple offering. As the leathers shimmered and the cottons swayed with slightly romantic accuracy, there was a certain edge about his latest fashions that we found endlessly alluring. A high-necked leather skirt-suit with a slightly cocoon-ish shape had a Matrix-like feel to it that was so cool and clean. A black wool men’s coat, on the other hand, offset by blotches of paint and a cream-colored sash by the waist was doubly mysterious for its tinges of color and attitude. These are the kinds of simplistic approaches that will more or less make bigger impacts nowadays than those that are seemingly copied from decades before. This was a modern and new Assembly New York we just witnessed, and in this day and age, that’s almost rare!
