Romanticism is uncommon in the sphere of menswear, which makes Sébastien Meunier’s spring 2019 menswear collection for Ann Demeulemeester all the more noteworthy. The eerie yet emotional show presented the most elaborate of 19th-century dressing constructed with a 21st-century sensibility. There were waistcoats and peasant shirts—all of which looked straight out of a Jane Austen novel but done so languidly that they looked contemporary. Ironically, the modernity came in the opulent accessories—lace gloves and veiled hats on men—akin to the gender fluidity that has recently taken over fashion. Designers find it difficult to stand out in Paris nowadays, but Sébastien Meunier’s new menswear collection did so with such romantic ease.
