“Fashion is like rock music. There is no rock music without rebellion.” shared artistic director Sebastian Meunier. The spirit of rebellion was incredibly felt during his Fall 2019 Menswear show for Ann Demeulemeester, harkening back to the founder’s bombastic days as part of the revolutionary design group in the 80s, Antwerp Six. This season, Meunier offers a hybrid of contemporary edge and the signatures that have made Ann Demeulemeester a go-to brand for streetwear and rock music enthusiasts. As usual, velvet was used to create romantic and sweeping silhouettes, many of which fell to the floor in a domineering way. Brocades were cut into suits and separate that were fit for rock royalty, but also had an ease to them that was essential to the rebellious spirit Meunier conjured up. The juxtaposition between the sharp tailoring and the deconstructed pieces also contributed to such an effect. It’s clear what Meunier message is this season: live by your own rules! It’ll surely resonate among men (and a few women) come fall!
