There was something military-esque about Amiri’s Fall 2019 Menswear show. It wasn’t just because of the sharp tailoring and the upright attitude the models presented on the runway, but there was a rebellious and tough spirit behind the collection that one couldn’t shake off. There was a sense of rigor among the clothes as if to suggest that such garments are stylish protections than just mere decorations. And as the models marched on, the message became all too clear. It started with an all-black array of streamlined silhouettes. A short double-breasted jacket here, a satin bomber there, and a whole lot of leather Chelsea boots had the toughness factor start at a 100%. Things did get softer as the show progressed, both in textile and color. Cashmere outerwear and plush wooly pieces offered a more grounded and easier look, one that’s not too intense that people would be intimidated by. The hints of python skin and rustic suede were tinges of glamour thrown into the mix for good measure. All in all, this was a melodious Amiri collection that touched upon rigidity and sophistication in such a stern way. And while beautiful, whether people will buy into it remains to be seen.
