As streetwear takes center stage, underground labels and luxury brands alike are challenged to put forth new ideas on what today’s fashions should look like. In his spring 2019 show in Paris, Matthew Williams at Alyx suggested turning seemingly mundane and faded codes of luxury into cool and hip pieces. This high-low philosophy actually originated from the likes of Off-White’s Virgil Abloh and Vetements’ Demna Gvasalia, but Williams executed it beautifully in his own right. He presented such expert tailoring, proving he didn’t conform to the idea of oversized as the barometer for streetwear. His skin-tight separates and swimsuit-like shirts looked like they were constructed right on the models’ bodies—a telling testament to his craft. The collection was a huge success for such a young brand, and things can only go up from here.
