Joseph Altuzarra‘s latest collection was as ‘Altuzarra‘ as it can get! And this doesn’t necessarily mean as good as it seems. Inspired by his recent trip to Marrakech, the designer held another wanderlust-inspired show for Fall 2019. This exotic Mediterranean-meets-Middle East vibe has been a stronghold for him in seasons past, so it was clear to see that Altuzarra was in his element this season. However, this doesn’t excuse him from basically rehashing his past works for the new season. In all honesty, we see it as an insult to both critics and clients alike that he thought he could get away with it. Firstly, the pairing of bulky outerwear with flattering dresses has been over and done with. And even with new prints and different textiles, the look remains the same. As does his tied-up drapings, which led to questionable styling choices that looked rather overwhelming than simply maximalist. Still, there was a lot to unpack here that did work too. The prints were subtle and worked perfectly with his stronger silhouettes (albeit familiar ones). and the metallic one-shoulder plissé cocktail frocks were quite electric! Had he focused more on these areas, this would have been a much better offering than realized!
