We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: enough with the gimmicks! There’s been too many of them on the Fall 2019 runways, including that of Aalto‘s. We’re not necessarily sure what Tuomas Merikoski was thinking when he was designing the label’s Fall 2019 collection, but one thing we are certain of is that he was definitely influenced by what’s been happening in the streetwear scene. Almost all of his looks were rehashes of the same old tropes the likes of Vetements and Off-White have been presenting in recent season. There’s practically nothing new here, just differently-styled streetwise basics. Even the floral prints were so bad! They looked like curtains plucked from the windows and made into “streetwear” clothing—nothing ‘cool‘ nor ‘edgy‘ about them! And coming back to our point on gimmicks, the show left us confused about two things. First, why did the model wearing an all-black skirt-suit with a strictly tailored jacket and a swiveling satin midi skirt (one of the very few desirable looks in the show) have green plastic hovering on her head as she went down the runway? What was the point of it? And second, what was up with those berets? We weren’t aware that this was a parade of stereotypical wannabe-Parisiennes (during Paris Fashion Week no less). Granted, Merikoski had a lot of interesting ideas, his execution sorely missed the mark. Here’s to hoping he gets better next season!
