There was something almost monastic about Natalia Alaverdian new spring 2019 collection for A.W.A.K.E. Maybe she was influenced by this year’s extravagant MET theme, Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and The Catholic Imagination? Her shapes this season seems rigid and structured, albeit most of her works are, but this season had a particularly strict sense of prim and proper. Check the stark-white semi-pleated jumpsuit with the geometric shoulders—it looked almost clergy-like with its strong shape and pristine structure. As did the monochromatic oversized looks that were perfect for any business meeting. Despite her touch of fun and fantasy, Alaverdian understands that her clients will need clothes to wear when climbing up the corporate ladder, and this season, she gave them a lot of great options. But it wouldn’t be an A.W.A.K.E. collection without a little bit of quirk, which came in the landscape and animal prints that decorated the slim-cut trousers and streamlined pencil skirts. Still, it was nice to see, even for one season, that the A.W.A.K.E. woman was mature and grown-up.
