These days, most of the industry loves putting on or watching a spectacle. Just Karl Lagerfeld’s gargantuan Chanel shows alone has all of social media in a frenzy every season. But there is still some speck of the business, small but lucrative, who chooses to let the clothes speak for themselves. One such brand is A Détacher, whose 20th year anniversary wasn’t even marked with a runway show during the Spring 2019 New York Fashion Week. Instead, founder and designer Mona Kowalska opted for a quiet presentation of her interesting and entirely intellectual designs. The kind of woman she dresses looks to be, based on her seasonal collection, one that doesn’t focus on the fashion industry but appreciated beautiful clothes. Her freeform and oversized silhouettes suggest that this woman defines sexy with attitude and noy bodycon dresses. Nor does she for a lot of bling and sequins, but rather showstopping prints in the forms of multi-colored zebra and green polka-dots. Against other labels that have experienced the same longevity, A Détacher is one whose relevance relies on the uniqueness of their customer’s styles, not how many likes they get on social media.
