Statement pieces are not for everyone, nor are they created equally. Some would find one group of statement makers more appealing than the others, while others would dismiss the very same set for reasons unique to each person: too loud, a tad tacky, just not showing enough personality. A chosen statement piece could make or break an ensemble; its greatest purpose is to pull an outfit together. Here’s one that could do that literally and figuratively, although the latter depends from one person to another.
Maison Margiela does not shy away from bold statement creations, sometimes of questionable nature, as we’ve seen quite recently in its distressed sneakers. This time around, it has produced a belt that doubles as a measuring tape. The design does not seem too strange given how both belts and tapes look and function, but not everyone can see a measure tape and immediately think that it could be the design of a belt now, right?
The belt in questions forms part of Maison Margiela’s FW18 collection, pieces of which are now up for grabs through retail stores and online shops carrying the brand. The gorgeous calf leather is sourced from Italy, and the whole accessory is completed in the European country as well, which just means that you can count on its quality. It takes on a slim silhouette as well as a dual loop ring to wrap them around the waist, something we do not see that often anymore.
The rest of the belt shows numbered metrics, which might be the problematic part for some. We doubt everyone would be thrilled to have their waistline revealed for the world to see, even when this one stands out as a unique accessory. But the numbers are what make this the ‘measuring tape belt’, so Maison Margiela couldn’t really afford to do away with it unless you just want a plain, good ol’ belt.
We think it looks the sharpest in black, but we’ve also seen the belt in white. Think it’s for you? This Maison Margiela measuring tape belt is available for US$345 and can be found in select online retailers:
The opinion on the belt so far seems to be divided into ingenious and just downright lazy. How about you, what’s your take? Drop us a comment below.
