It’s easy to dismiss 3.1 Phillip Lim’s Fall 2019 collection as minimalist—and to accuse him of attempting to step into Phoebe Philo‘s shoes as the new leader of minimalism— but the simplicity in his latest line had a deeper meaning to it. This season, his minimal take was sort of a clean slate, leaning more on reliability and strength rather than adhering to a certain trend. You can see it in his clean lines, flattering propositions and proportions that had a timeless appeal to them. A shapeless dove gray double-breasted trench coat was très chic but was also pragmatic in the overall grand scheme of things. Off-the-shoulder cocktail dresses brought out the bare essentials, and beautifully pushed a subtly seductive style that wasn’t overt but also wasn’t all that prim neither. And what of the zebra print? Not even a full-on printed coat and frock looked vulgar. Everything about the collection was just right, which really highlighted Phillip Lim‘s own well-curated and refined eye for design. It won’t be a surprise for us if this 3.1 Phillip Lim line will become a major hit come fall!
