Description
Steel watches have reigned the watchmaking industry since the beginning. It’s the default option that watch and fashion enthusiasts go for almost automatically. Tag Heuer Monaco Bamford, despite its drawbacks, still achieves something worthy of commendation. Using an unconventional material and inspired by a highly-acclaimed vintage model, it’s able to maintain original quality while giving it an appeal that agrees with the modern market.

If not a complicated movement or great design, there’s little opportunity left for exceptionality in timepieces. Watches’ entry into the realm of the fashion world is more because of the latter reason, further allowed by customization. A touch of personalization is the best asset that draws people into these small mechanical devices. That’s exactly how Bamford Watch Department does it and it’s the quality that exemplifies the Tag Heuer Monaco.

Coming out as a special edition with only a limited number of 500 pieces, the Tag Heuer Monaco Bamford picks up from the good reputation of its original version in 1969. It is priced at US$10,600.00 because of the innovation it’s incorporated into the classic model that gained popularity when it was worn by Steve McQueen.

PROS

As the Monaco is made from a collaboration between Tag Heuer and the more recently-established Bamford Watch Company, the classic style of the square-shaped watch is re-imagined with Bamford’s customization methods. It captures right away (visually speaking), and is able to appeal to younger generations because of its attractive look.

Coming away from the previous steel material, this version involves the use of a carbon case especially molded to match the original. Design-wise, the square dial is outlined with details in aqua blue against an all-black background to present an avant-garde appearance. A signature crown is also retained at the 11:00 mark.

CONS

This version of the Monaco has something to show that’s comparable to its muse—the modernized overall look and contemporary details are visibly seen and distinguished. However, to achieve an appealing look that can match up to the original, a lot of alterations and compromise had to be done to accommodate the movement in the old watch design.

To some, this might be an accomplishment enabled by Bamford’s expertise in customization, but to those who are vintage lovers and avid fans of the original Monaco, this edition creates an issue with the first, especially as it’s reached a high reputation decades ago that this recent one potentially compares against. Also, this model is significantly different from the kinds of watches and Monaco models Tag Heuer itself has created before.
