JEANRICHARD

If we have to describe JEANRICHARD using only one word, it has to be ‘versatile’. The brand has the perfect balance of products through the system of their collections. Each collection represents the four major elements – air, water, earth, and fire –  and offers the appropriate specs for each of them. Special editions come and go to treat their customers with something more unique, but overall, every piece that comes from the brand is handled and crafted with equal care and precision.

The muse

The name of the brand is taken from a legendary pioneer and leader in the world of Swiss watchmaking, Daniel Jeanrichard. He’s known to be the founder of the watchmaking industry in the Swiss town of Neuchâtel because of his creation of the first watch in that region after studying and trying to repair the broken watch given to him as a young’un. The tools and machines watchmakers use today would be non-existent or would look differently if not for Jeanrichard.

His efforts to establish an apprenticeship did not go to waste because the luxury mechanical watchmaking industry is thriving to this day and is not threatened to be a lost craft. His visionary ways are also adopted for this eponymous brand.

Modern adaptation

Dr. Gino Macaluso is the man behind the brand, including the decision to take inspiration from Daniel Jeanrichard. The official relaunch of the brand came in 2012 under the Kering Group with the goal of merging modern watchmaking methods and their muse’s traditional values.

We know JEANRICHARD today to be one of the most competitive players in the world of luxury sports watches. The products are popular among people with the same adventurous and innovative approach to life. Some sports that the brand is great for are boat racing, football, and surfing, but it has also attracted the likes of James Blunt, the singer, and Capt. Sully, the pilot most famous for performing a casualty-free landing on the Hudson River in New York.

Elemental collections

As the brand’s collections are based on the major elements, so are the names related to them: Terrascope, Aquascope, and Aeroscope. The last one called 1681 has no direct connection but the watches under that collection represents fire in that they exude fiery passion.

Terrascope is for the land explorers out there, those who have an adventurer spirit in them. Its separable case allows many versions of it using different materials, including a black DLC coat on steel and pink gold. Its color options also varies if it comes in aluminum.

The Aquascope is a collection of diving watches, catering mostly to divers and hobbyists who frequent the beach and take part in water sports. The watches are equipped with a self-winding mechanical movement, enclosed in a steel case. It comes in different versions of PVD coatings and a buckle or strap for the fastening.

The Aeroscope collections consists of aviator watches for the frequent flyers. It gives you a selection of a chronograph or watch with a date and seconds, minutes, and hour apertures. Either way, all models are paired with titanium bracelets or rubber or leather straps.

The 1681 collection represents the year the real Jeanrichard made his first watch. The watches in this collection are like a tribute as every piece is equipped with a Jeanrichard-exclusive movement. This could also pass for the special fashion-forward collection because of its vivid color combinations and the elegant rubbergator strap made through a recently-developed laser technology.

Ethics & sustainability

From the ethical causes they support and the sustainability efforts they employ, JEANRICHARD sets an example for the conscious corporate practices that take into consideration all of life; other companies should take note. The company enumerates all social consciousness efforts they take part in, firstly with the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC). The brand bears certification from the council, ensuring they follow all ethical standards towards people and the environment, and that the company holds social responsibility over its overall decisions and actions.

For all the diamonds and gold they use, JEANRICHARD bears a Fairmined label and follows the Kimberley Process. Fairmined-certified gold comes from mines in Peru that ensure safety and provide support and livelihood for local people, not to mention directly protects and preserves the environment. The Kimberley Process checks where the diamonds come from and makes sure they’re not taken from conflicted areas and the sale doesn’t end up funding the conflict.

Further, under the Kering Group, JEANRICHARD uses the Kering Environmental Profit & Loss tool to measure the impacts of the company in all aspects, so they would know the actual cost it takes to produce the brand’s watches, not only monetarily.

In all these ways, JEANRICHARD sees sustainable development as the major factor that drives company decisions. The brand already applies so many efforts to keep doing the business right by their people and the environment and they also deliver on not only haute horlogerie but haute couture pieces. For the value of their Swiss-quality timepiece, your indirect contribution to their ethical practices is priceless.
